Jim and Stacy Sass started Threads Embroidery in Austin in 2003

Jim Sass and Stacy Springer started Threads Embroidery in Austin, Texas in 2003, after a few years of kicking around the idea.

Jim is from the Buffalo, New York area where he worked for six years doing embroidery for New Era Cap Co. of major sports caps fame. Since moving to Austin, he had worked for other embroidery companies but maintained the desire to start his own business.

Stacy had been a business executive for 15 years and was excited to put her experience to work in a real life start-up situation.

And so we began...

Through our initial discussions, market research and interviews with business owners in the Austin area, and as reinforced by our actual experience since, we discovered a few things:

From business owners we found out embroidery can be hard to get, sometimes taking several days to just receive a quote. We were going to make it easy with an online catalog and regular specials with pricing that includes embroidery.

Also people want to actually see what their design is going to look like embroidered. Before then their expectations maybe to too high or they can't even image how nice it will come out. That was the inspiration for our Free Tee Offer, a coupon which we routinely mail out to local businesses, and fast artwork proofs by email. We are so confident our embroidery is great, we know you are going to want more once you take a look.

And finally, repeat business and referrals are earned by good service and should be rewarded. We consider our customers our most valuable asset. And as such, we have special programs just for them including frequent Customer Exclusives that are only available to our customer, not the new guys.

Soon our customers starting asking us for other services such as getting their logo on pens or glasses or journals. Or, could they get us to screen print some t-shirts?

At first we started referring to local merchants but sometimes they wouldn't provide a quote or even return calls or e-mails. We decided to bring these in house so that our customers could receive the fast, no hassle service they were used to.

We researched and found direct to garment printing equipment that met our quality standards and found out how to do screen printing in our tight facilities. We set up partnerships with the best manufacturers and suppliers that could provide quick turnarounds and reliable service to our area for all the most popular promotional products.

The response was great. Our customers liked having their logo in one place and to be able to fulfill all their needs in one spot.
